Fill In The Blanks Word Games

Are you looking for fill in the blanks word games? Silly Little Cat has funny word games galore. Go straight to the games. Or….

Think of a thing, please.

Go ahead, imagine something; something with a label like ‘chair’ or ‘gorilla’ or ‘chandelier’. Got a word in mind? Good. That’s a noun, by the way.

Now, take your noun and try it for size in these sentences:

  • I use my __________ to clean the windows.
  • My brother has a pet __________. It has a really happy personality.
  • When my grandmother goes shopping, she always takes a __________ with her, to help her carry the groceries.
  • When navigating in an unfamiliar area, it is important to carry an up to date __________.
  • A key ingredient of any good soup is a large, fried __________.
  • People like to wear the latest fashion. A recent to trend is for hats. My sister won’t be seen without a __________ on her head.

Are you chuckling? That’s because we humans like the element of surprise. Finding that noun you chose, inappropriately placed in a sentence, is unexpected and therefore humorous.

And that’s why fill in the blanks word games such as Mad Libs* are so popular. For decades, people have been composing stories with strategically placed blanks and creating preposterous narratives with incongruous words.

We started writing word games at Silly Little Cat because we home-educate, and it seemed like a fun way to play with words and learn about vocabulary. Our word games soon made it outside of ‘school’ and we had the most fun round the campfire, amusing Grandpa with our crazy tales. This is truly a game for all generations. And each story can be reused multiple times: just make up a new word list and start again.

When you’re playing with young children, pretty much any unexpected word is funny. Nine year old boys like to put ‘poop’ or ‘willy’ in every gap and adults… well, let’s just say there are plenty of innuendos.
